Norris Whisnant, 65, ASI Class of 1958 of Shelby, N. C.  died Sunday, January 14, 2004

He was born on April 7, 1938.

He was Football King.  He played football, basketball, and baseball.  He was president of the Bible Club and FFA Secretary.  He was also a member of the Glee Club. He also graduated from Western-Carolina.  He has 2 children – Thomas and Suzanne, and 2 step-daughters – Candy and Tonya.  He also has a beautiful grandson (Donovan) that was his life. Norris’ career was in textile management from which he was able to retire in 1998.  He and I shared 17 wonderful years.  He was a very special person that I admired and loved very much.

Norris's brother Horace graduated from ASI and came back to be a teacher and Assistant Principal.

For someone we never thought was sick,
Seems the breath of life left you so quick.
But we can treasure the years that you gave to us,
The love the laughter that meant so much.
And the wisdom you left in someone so small,
Will keep your memory alive in us all.

 FUNERAL BLUES

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone.
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead.
Put crepe bows round the white necks of public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North,my South, my East and West.
My working week and my Sunday Rest.
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever; I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one'
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

            --W. H. Auden
